Yeah, I remember when Zips got replaced by Rally's on the strip. Walmart back in the day was like shopping downtown for any college student with a few bucks. I liked the Carbondale life so much that I actually thought about buying a house down there and on the outskirts in Murphysboro (my oldest son 14 lives there with his mom, but that's another story I'll have to go into later.)
I'm on the musical staff here at St John's MB Church here in Chicago. I've been with them since '98. I've been doing some other playing as well... sitting in with some great local blues talent here in the city (Fernando Jones, Tracy Adams, and a few others.) I'll be doing an R&B gig at the Checkerboard in Hyde Park on Oct 11th, and then from there I've got a month full of gigs at some clubs in East Chicago, IN for November. Once in a while I go to the Velvet Lounge on Cermak to play jazz with some of the hottest kats in Chicago on Sunday nights.
Hey, so what ever happened to LaJoi?! She was quite an interesting young lady.
Dru, what's up man?! Long time no see!! Things have been going quite good man. I remember laying those tracks down for LaJoi back then, I actually still have a copy of the master around here somewhere. You know she loved your voice. (wink wink)
Right now, I'm just like everyone else, trying to keep my head above the water. But I can't complain.. God has been good to me. I started my own business after I got sick and tired of selling real estate back in 1998, and I haven't looked back since. I do know I miss those Carbondale days.. Zips burgers, $1.05 gas, University Hall (my dorm on Wall St), Make it Shine for a Dime (special at the car wash on Wall St).
Hit me back, and let me know what you've been up to.
I keep my eyes wide and options open. The entire time I've been in or around the military, I've dreamt of something else. Next up, I'm looking to leave Federal law enforcement and get with a gov't contractor as a protection/security specialist. More money, more opportunity, less hassle. Law enforcement is no fun once you become a supervisor. Back when I was in the trenches, ripping and running like I had no sense, playing with all sorts of weapons, it was FUN!!! Additionally, my wife and I are getting into some side hustles that will eventually free us from conventional work altogether. It's all about that hustle and grind, baby!!! :)
Dru, you know what's funny? Long before I ever got to Kenwood, Alvin and I were drawing comics together at Wacker Elementary. Jake and I compared notes, but never really worked on anything together, outside of the "Crimestopper" newsletter. Back then, all I wanted to do was draw! I decided, however, to pick up a marketable skill, so I originally joined the Navy as a Sonar Technician (a la "Hunt for the Red October") and got an advanced electronics background. Funny thing is, I was always more interested in weapons and tactics. I eventually became a military policeman, ran my own tactical team, got out and became a police supervisor in the civilian sector. I like it, but I'm moving on to bigger and better things...
LOL!!! Yeah, at one point, I did wanna work for Marvel or DC. However, my urge to serve my country and see the world took on a life of its own. I've been some of everywhere (a few places notwithstanding) and have had some crazy adventures in some interesting corners of the globe. The funny thing is, I really don't draw anymore, except when I'm teaching my kids the basics. So, what's been going on with you, brother? It's nice being back in touch.
